7 Signs Your Air Filter Needs Replacing

Don't Wait for a Breakdown

A clogged filter quietly costs you money and air quality long before anything fails. Here are the signs it is time for a fresh one.

The Seven Signs

  • Weak airflow from your vents or registers
  • Rising energy bills with no other explanation — the system works harder to push air through a blocked filter
  • Dust settling faster on surfaces around the home or office
  • Visible grime — the filter looks grey, matted or caked with dust
  • Musty or stale smells when the system runs
  • Allergy or asthma symptoms flaring up indoors
  • The system runs longer to reach the same temperature

A Simple Rule of Thumb

Standard filters should be checked every one to three months. Pets, renovations, dusty areas and bushfire season all shorten that interval. If you hold the filter up to the light and can't see through it, replace it.

Cleaning vs Replacing

Washable filters can be cleaned and reused; disposable filters should be swapped out. Never refit a damp washable filter.
