Preventing Air Bypass: The Role of Frames and Gaskets

The Hidden Problem

You can fit the best filter money can buy, but if air can slip around it through gaps, that unfiltered air goes straight into your system. This is called air bypass, and it quietly undermines even high-grade filtration.

Where Bypass Happens

  • Gaps between the filter and its frame
  • A filter that is slightly too small for the slot
  • Worn or missing gaskets and seals
  • Warped or damaged housings

The Fix: Proper Fit and Sealing

  • Correct sizing — a filter should fit snugly, with no gaps for air to escape through
  • Gaskets and seals — close the gap between filter and frame
  • Sturdy frames — keep the media held firmly in place

This is exactly why a custom-made filter that fits perfectly often outperforms a slightly-wrong off-the-shelf size — there is simply nowhere for air to bypass.

Small Detail, Big Difference

Eliminating bypass can dramatically improve real-world filtration performance without changing the filter grade at all.
