How to Choose the Right Air Filter for Your Home

Understanding Filter Ratings

Walking into the world of air filters can feel overwhelming. G3, G4, F5, HEPA H13 — what does it all mean? Let's break it down in plain English.

The Basics: Pre-Filters (G3 & G4)

G3 (Washable) filters are your entry-level option. They capture large particles like dust, lint, and hair. The big advantage? They're washable and reusable, making them cost-effective for general use. These are commonly used in return air grilles and as pre-filters in larger systems.

G4 filters step things up with finer filtration. They capture smaller dust particles and pollen, making them a solid all-rounder for most residential HVAC systems. If you have a standard split system or ducted air conditioner, a G4 filter is often the sweet spot.

Medium Efficiency: F5 Filters

F5 filters provide medium-efficiency filtration, capturing smaller airborne particles that G4 filters miss. They're ideal for homes where someone has mild allergies or where you want noticeably cleaner air. F5 filters are also commonly used in commercial environments.

High Efficiency: HEPA Filters

HEPA H13 filters capture 99.97% of particles at 0.3 microns — that includes bacteria, mould spores, and fine dust. HEPA H14 goes even further at 99.995%. These are medical-grade filters used in air purifiers, hospital environments, and critical applications.

For residential use, HEPA filters are excellent for:

  • Asthma and allergy sufferers
  • Baby nurseries
  • Bedrooms
  • Homes near bushfire-prone areas

Specialty Options

Carbon filters contain activated carbon that absorbs odours, VOCs (volatile organic compounds), and gases. They're great for kitchens, areas near busy roads, or anywhere smells are an issue.

Electrostatic mesh uses static charge to attract particles. These are particularly effective for fine dust and can be used alongside standard filters.

How to Choose: A Simple Decision Framework

1. Basic dust control → G4 pleated filter

2. Allergies or pets → F5 or Carbon filter

3. Asthma or health concerns → HEPA H13/H14

4. Odour control → Carbon filter

5. Budget-conscious → G3 washable filter

Getting the Right Size

Check your existing filter for printed dimensions. If there's no label, measure the filter slot (length × width × depth). Not sure? Take a photo and send it to us — we'll identify the right size, and if it's non-standard, we can manufacture a custom filter to fit perfectly.
