Ducted air conditioning is fantastic — quiet, even and hidden away. But because the filter is usually tucked behind a return air grille in a ceiling or wall, it is easy to forget it exists. A neglected ducted filter chokes airflow, strains the system and recirculates dust through every room.

Finding Your Filter

Most ducted systems draw air back through a large return air grille, often in a hallway ceiling. The filter sits directly behind it. The grille usually hinges down or lifts out to reveal the filter.

Cleaning vs Replacing

• •Washable filters can be vacuumed and rinsed, then fully dried before refitting
• •Disposable filters should be replaced rather than cleaned

Either way, check the filter every one to three months, and more often if you have pets, renovations nearby or dusty conditions.
